Adora Estate Winery |
1-866-404-9463 |
Location: Summerland, British Columbia, Canada Adora marches to its own drummer in many ways. Its signature wines, Decorus and Maximus, not only have Latin names but bear vintage dates in Roman numerals, (The back label translates the date.) Every wine is a blend: there are, for example, eight different white grapes in both Decorus and the 2000 vintage of a white called Elements No 8. Even the single variety wines are assembled from grapes purchased from about 15 different vineyards throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen. The grapes are vinified separately and kept in small tanks, sometimes for several years, before blending. While other wineries release wines as early as eight months after harvest, Adora ages its wines anywhere from 2 to 4 years before selling them. "In everything we've done, it doesn't matter what the industry thinks the standard is," Jenkins says. "If we don't agree with it, we will do it another way. We like to buck the trend." Adora, however, is not hiding behind a contrary attitude to camouflage uncertain quality. The wines here are bold and complex.

Dirty Laundry Vineyard |
(250) 494-8815 |
Location: Summerland, British Columbia, Canada The vineyard and winery, orignially known as Scherzinger Vineyards and Cottage Winery, were founded by Liz and Edgar Scherzinger who came to Summerland in 1974. Edgar planted some of the first Gewürztraminer in 1978 with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to follow. In fact Edgar was one of the first growers to plant Vinifera vines in the Okanagan Valley. The grapes were contracted out to other wineries until 1995 when the winery was established. They never looked back. By 1999 Liz and Edgar were ready to retire and they managed to convince their friends Ron & Cher Watkins that this would be a great lifestyle and business to get into. Ron had taken some viticulture courses years ago, and now started to work closely with the Scherzingers to learn the business. After a transition of some time, Ron & Cher bought the winery in May 2001.
In 2005 the name of the winery was changed to "Dirty Laundry Vineyard." So what's that name all about? Of course there is a story....watch for the new website: www.dirtylaundry.ca. Or, you may have to come by the winery to find out the whole story.

Greata Ranch |
(250) 767-2768 |
Location: Peachland, British Columbia, Canada Greata Ranch was established in 1895 by British immigrant George Greata. Although the property was later managed and then sold to the Long family, locals have long known the site as "Greata Ranch"
The Senator had visited Greata with his father when he was a young boy, he well remembered the magnificent peaches that he had sampled. This knowledge served him well when the property came up for sale in 1994. There was very little weather data on the property, but remembering the wonderful fruit that had been grown successfully gave him the in-site that grapes would do well.
The first vines were planted in 1996 and the first harvest in the fall of 1998. Since that time Greata Ranch Vineyards has produced high quality grapes that have been showcased in many CedarCreek wines. In the spring of 2003 the first of the Greata Ranch wines were released under their own label and sold from the Greata location.

Hollywood and Wine Vineyard |
(250) 494- 0311 |
Location: Summerland, British Columbia, Canada Seldom explored by wine tourists, the country side just west of Summerland is a photogenic maze of agricultural valleys where farms grow everything from tree fruits to buffalo. Neil and Betty Massy moved to their 11 acre slice of this paradise in 1998. They chose to replace the apple trees with organically-grown vines. They call it Hollywood and Wine because Neil, a truck driver for movie production companies, has spent a lot of time around ovie sets and befriended many performers, whose autographed photos will be displayed in his wine shop.

Sumac Ridge Estate Winery |
250.494.0451 |
Location: Summerland, British Columbia, Canada Sumac Ridge Estate Winery produced its first vintage in 1980, making it British Columbia's first, or premier, estate winery. Since its inception, Sumac Ridge has been one of the Okanagan Valley's leading producers of VQA wines. In the spring of 2000 Sumac Ridge Estate Winery joined Vincor International, to expand production of its world-class wines.
At the Summerland winery site, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes are grown on a vineyard sloping towards Lake Okanagan. Further
south is Black Sage Vineyard, a 115-acre vineyard in Oliver (in the south Okanagan) where such noble red varieties as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc are grown in addition to a number of white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc. The winery augments its own supply of grapes from other respected vineyards throughout the south Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys.
Pioneering in many ways, Sumac Ridge Estate Winery was the first Okanagan winery to produce premium sparkling wines. Sumac Ridge has developed consistently award-winning wines, as well as a Port-style wine, from premium vinifera grapes. A consistent and determined innovator, the winery introduced the region's first Meritage bottling in 1995, from grapes grown at the Black Sage Vineyard in Oliver. This Meritage also garnered a rating of 85 points in Wine Spectator magazine in 1999, the only Canadian winery to have a red wine mentioned. Sumac Ridge Estate Winery's super premium Pinnacle is Sumac Ridge's culmination of the desire to produce the highest quality red wine ever crafted in Canada.
